Human Rights Project

As part of my career, this semester I had to take a Human Rights course. Our Professor assigned an art project in which we had to apply what we had learned throughout the semester in whatever art form we chose.

For some reason I didn’t think of writing anything. Instead, I made a couple of drawings of the biggest world news of this semester. As part of the coursework, we had to follow the news in order to identify the human rights that were either being violated or being respected, so I decided to make the drawings in order to inform a general public about the news. Whether we like it or not, the fact that people are disconnected from the world news is a reality, and many times it is because people don’t want to read. For this reason, I thought that informing through drawings would be an alternative way of highlighting some of the biggest world news of Spring 2019.

The Philippines. January 23, 2019.

President Rodrigo Duarte has struck another legislation in his bloody War on Drugs. Now, the criminal age in the Philippines has lowered down to 12 years old.

Venezuela. February 23, 2019.

President Nicolas Maduro denied that there was a humanitarian crisis in Venezuela. At the same time, people literally searched for food in the dumpsters. There was a truck in Colombia which contained humanitarian aid and it tried to cross into Venezuela to help ameliorate the crisis. Instead, the truck caught fire and no help was delivered that day.

Brunei. April 3, 2019.

Brunei’s new Penal Code makes adultery and same-sex acts punishable by stoning to death.

Argentina. April 9, 2019.

Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo is a group of women who search the babies who were stolen during Argentina’s Dirty War in order to reunify families. They have been doing this for forty years, and although some people disagree with this group, their work is still relevant today. They have found the missing baby number 129.

Professor Rick Haperin always teaches this class. Every year, every semester, and every day he reminds us that the most basic human right is the Right to Life with Dignity.
